Kin of missing Pinoy crew of ill-fated ship still expecting good news

Relatives of a Davao-based crewmember of a Bahamas-flagged cargo vessel that sank off Vietnam last weekend remain hopeful he is alive and well.

The father of Alexis Bacalla is worried about his son, who was listed among those missing from the sinking of the Bulk Jupiter, GMA Davao reported.

"Alam nyo naman kung ano ang isang ama sa kanyang anak, mga pamilya, o sa nangyari. Naghihintay lang kami. Hindi masukat [ang pag-aalala namin]," said Nelson Bacalla.

He said he last talked to Alexis, whom he described as a good son, last Christmas.

Alexis graduated cum laude in marine administration in 2011 from the Davao Merchant Marine Academy. He was a scholar of the Norwegian Ship Owners Association Philippine Cadet Program.

On the other hand, Alexis' teacher at DMMA, Engineer Noel Rosete, described him as a brilliant law-abiding cadet who followed regulations.

Alexis is the junior third officer of the Bulk Jupiter, which sank off Vietnam last Friday. He had been a seaman for three years.

So far, one Filipino crewmember had been rescued while two were reported dead.

In the meantime, his family continues to wait for word from Alexis' manning agency on his fate.

For its part, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration said it continues to coordinate with the manning agency on the status of the crewmembers.

As for Alexis' fellow scholars, they said they would remain courageous despite the dangers they would face.

"It's based on our willingness that we pursue this course as our own motivation and for our families and for ourselves," said DMMA scholar Anton Johan Relona.

Meanwhile, in Iloilo, relatives of another missing seaman, 28-year-old Rosilo Sansolis, remain hopeful he is alive and well, GMA Iloilo's Joecel Huesca reported.

"That time nagreklamo na siya na hindi maganda yung panahon," Sansolis' wife Jhosna said.

She said she last talked to Rosilo last Jan. 2.

"Hoping pa po ako na ligtas siya dahil ayon nga sa naligtas, ang 16 na crew ay missing pa," Sansilo's mother Rosita said. —Joel Locsin/KBK, GMA News
