Two dead Pinoy sailors, 16 missing crew of ill-fated Bulk Jupiter vessel identified

The two Filipino sailors who perished in the sinking of the Bahamas-flagged cargo carrier Bulk Jupiter and its 16 other missing crewmen have been identified.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the fatalities were:
  • Ronel Acueza Andrin, 45, a native of Quezon province; and
  • Third Officer Jerome Maquilang Dinoy, 23, of Cebu.

Their remains will be transported back to the Philippines after receiving clearance from Vietnamese authorities, Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said, adding the search for the 16 crewmembers is ongoing.

A list of the missing crewmen was obtained by Vietnamese news agency Tuoi Tres News.

The missing Filipinos were identified as:

  • Renner Carl Resos Abugadie
  • Gibbson Ladica Ranara
  • Alexis Thomas Piala Bacalla
  • Joseph Bantolino Damasen
  • Lot Olavides Correos
  • Reydante Santos Mendoza
  • Ricky Arangorin Gapasin
  • Jonniefer Derapite Aleta
  • Renator Flores Toribio
  • Wynfred Penaranda Balazo
  • Edgar Tabanao Melecio
  • George Barbaso Espliguera Jr.
  • Edwin Deriada Acebo
  • Rosilo Navarro Sansolis
  • Gilbert Feliciano Flora, and
  • Mark Timothy Denosta Causarin.

The ship, manned by an all-Filipino crew, sank off Vietnamese waters on Friday while on its way to China from Malaysia. Only chief cook Angelito Rojas has so far survived the incident.

Rojas, Jose said, is under the care of the Vietnamese Maritime Rescue Center and will be repatriated to the Philippines soon.

“Rojas was still in shock so he wasn’t able to give his statement to investigators,” Jose said.

In another ship mishap in Scotland, Jose confirmed that a Filipino was among the crew of the Cypriot-registered vessel Cemfjord that sank Saturday night. All crew were presumed dead after a massive search and rescue did not find any survivors, reports said.

“We are awaiting statement from our embassy in London,” Jose said. — RSJ, GMA News
