Pinoy in Virginia Beach wins $1 million from US Powerball draw

A Filipino based in Virginia Beach took home $1 million before taxes from the coveted Powerball lottery in the United States last January 19.
Teofilo Mesina won the amount after picking five numbers correctly for the January 13 drawing of the lottery, which reached a meteoric prize of $1.6 billion before three winners struck gold during the same drawing.
He shared with Powerball that he casually bought tickets for the lottery and picked between a mix of his numbers and numbers chosen by the computer for his tickets.
Mesina only found out about his win after checking the numbers after the drawing and immediately called his son once he realized that his numbers matched.
"The next day, I talked to a financial adviser so I can decide how to handle my winnings. I wanted to win the whole thing, but I'm lucky because I won a million!" he said.
The $1.6 billion top prize for the Powerball draw was split into between winners from California, Florida and Tennessee that sold them the lucky tickets.
Each winner took home $528.8 million and remain anonymous despite lottery officials revealing the retailers that sold the winning tickets. Rie Takumi/JST, GMA News
