Published September 1, 2020 5:30pm By VIRGIL LOPEZ, GMA News No Filipinos have been infected with COVID-19 in Mexico, which is among the 10 most affected countries worldwide, Philippine Ambassador Demetrio Tuason said Tuesday. “We are lucky. We have been spared [from] this terrible pandemic,” Tuason said in a televised briefing. “However, Mexico is full of COVID cases. Mexico has a very high death rate.” Tuason said there are only over 100 Filipinos in Mexico, which has so far recorded nearly 600,000 infections and over 64,000 deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins University & Medicine Coronavirus Resource Center. The ambassador said a Filipino contracted the virus in Costa Rica though it was only a mild case. The embassy is also arranging the repatriation of five Filipinos in Mexico, he added. Tuason is also in charge of overseeing the welfare of Filipinos in Belize, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Panama.—AOL, GMA News
