DMW offers help to OFWs with canceled flights due to Kanlaon Volcano eruption ---- By GMA Integrated News

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) is offering assistance to overseas Filipino workers whose flights were cancelled at the Bacolod-Silay airport due to the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac on Tuesday instructed the department's office in Region 6 and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to provide assistance to both inbound and outbound OFWs. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines ordered a cancellation of all flights to and from the Bacolod-Silay Airport due to volcano's eruption on Monday evening. Kanlaon Volcano erupted for a total of 6 minutes starting at 6:51 p.m. on Monday, according to PHIVOLCS. The volcano spouted 5,000-meter plumes, followed by a relatively strong volcanic-tectonic earthquake. A total of 1,562 individuals or 210 families in Negros Occidental were transferred to evacuation centers following the eruption, based the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) as of 6 a.m. on Tuesday. The PDRRMC said Kanlaon Volcano’s eruption affected 84 barangays across 10 cities and municipalities. PHIVOLCS has raised the alert level at Kanlaon Volcano from Alert Level 1 to Alert Level 2, meaning increased unrest. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/KBK, GMA Integrated News
