MANILA, Philippines – The number of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who died in the deadly hostage crisis in an Algerian gas complex has risen to eight, Department of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Raul Hernandez said on Friday.
Hernandez said the DFA received news on Thursday night from its team in Algeria that one of the two missing OFWs was found dead.
He said the names of the eight Filipinos, who died when Islamic militants attacked the In Amenas gas complex, were not disclosed at the request of their respective families.
Most of the Filipinos died of gunshot and explosion wounds.
"We already have the names of the fatalities. However, we cannot disclose them since their respective families wanted some privacy," Hernandez told radio dzMM.
Hernandez said most of the fatalities worked for the Japan Gas Corporation, while the rest worked for British and French companies.
Meanwhile, four more Filipinos remain confined at the Al Azhar Clinic in the capital city of Algiers. All of them are now in stable condition.
Hernandez earlier said 17 other Filipinos escaped when Islamist militants took over the complex.
Algeria has said 37 foreigners of eight different nationalities and an Algerian were killed in the four-day siege, which ended in a rescue operation by security forces who captured three of the assailants.
The Islamic militants, who have links to terrorist organization al Qaeda, were protesting the presence of French troops in the adjacent country of Mali. – with Agence France-Presse
