PH Embassy warns teachers vs illegal recruiters

MANILA -- The Philippine Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam has warned Filipino teachers against illegal recruiters.
Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Jerril Santos issued the warning after some Filipinos working as English teachers in Hanoi filed complaints about poor working conditions in the country.
Santos said the latest report they received was from a 32-year-old Filipina teacher who worked in the Blue Ocean Language School, which claimed to be connected with the Lincoln School of Management.
Upon arrival in Vietnam, she was immediately driven to the school which was 100 kilometers away from the airport.
Her passport was suddenly confiscated and she was forced to teach a class of at least 20 students without a contract.
The Filipina teacher said she was also barred from leaving the school building and forced to wear sexy clothes while teaching.
Fortunately, she was able to escape last November 12, and managed to notify authorities and ask help from the Embassy.
Santos reminded Filipinos to always check the background of employers and review the employment contract before taking on any offer of work abroad.
They should also coordinate with the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) to avoid falling victims to illegal recruiters, Santos said. -- Report from Johnson Manabat, dzMM
