Illegal OFWs in UAE urged to avail of amnesty


MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos illegally staying in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are urged to take advantage of the amnesty and leave the country without penalty or regularize their visas.
Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the amnesty was made available last December 4, 2012. It will run until February 3, 2013.
Baldoz said she received a report from Labor Attache to Abu Dhabi Nasser Munder.
Munder said the illegal residents should visit residency departments across the UAE to obtain exit visas or outpasses and leave the country without penalty.
The DOLE said the last time the UAE has an amnesty for illegal residents was in 2007. A total of 341,958 illegal residents of various nationalities availed of the amnesty and 95,000 illegal workers, also of various nationalities, legalized their status.
An estimated 209,385 Filipinos are working in the UAE.
