Pinoys evacuated from Algeria to pass Dubai before returning to PHL

The 34 overseas Filipino workers evacuated from Algeria after a hostage-taking incident there may pass through the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before returning to Manila.

Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) head Carmelita Dimzon was quoted in a report on dzRH radio Saturday that the OFWs will take a flight to Dubai from Madrid before arriving home.

Dimzon said she is making preparations to contact the relatives of the 34 OFWs to inform them of their arrival.

The report did not immediately give a specific date on when the OFWs are to arrive in Manila.

On the other hand, Dimzon assured the relatives of the OFWs in Algeria that there was no reason to evacuate all OFWs there, saying the incident was confined to a gas field there.

Meanwhile, Vice President Jejomar Binay voiced concern for the safety of OFWs who may still be trapped in the oil depot in Algeria.

Binay, the presidential adviser on OFW concerns, particularly voiced concern over news reports that two Filipinos have been killed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is still verifying the reports.

"The Algerian government has yet to provide any official report to the Department of Foreign Affairs and we share the department's hope that such report be provided at the soonest time possible. Let us pray for an end to the crisis in Algeria and the safety of our kababayans," Binay said on hisFacebook page. - VVP, GMA News
