Over 200,000 voters abroad delisted from official voters' list — Comelec

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has delisted some 200,000 registered voters abroad from the official voters' list for failing to file a manifestation of intent to vote in the May 2013 polls.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said, “If you recall the registered voters for OAV went up to 900,000 to almost a million but we sent a notice to the more than 200,000 who did not vote twice that they will be delisted.”

Comelec noted that only 29 overseas absentee voters (OAVs) complied with the order to file a manifestation.

“We told them that if you say your intention to vote then we will activate it. But out of the 200,000 only 29 replied so we are going to proceed with the delisting of the over 200,000,” he added.

Brillantes said that it was important for Comelec to know the number of voters in preparing the ballots.

“Just imagine we will prepare 978,000 plus ballots and then not all of them will vote?” he said.

Comelec resolution

Comelec earlier issued Resolution 9567 saying that individuals who failed to participate in two previous elections warrants removal from the list.

“Pursuant to the foregoing, a total of 238,557 OAV who failed to vote during the 2007 and 2010 national elections should now be removed or deleted from the NROAV (National Registry of OAV),” said the resolution dated December 4, 2012.

The Comelec gave the OAVs a final chance to file a manifestation until December 21 last year.

“Only after the failure of the concerned OAV to submit the required application by December 21, 2012 shall be removed from the NROAV,” the Comelec said that time.

There are an estimated 915,000 registered absentee voters in other countries. -  VVP, GMA News
