POEA reminds OFWs vs. falling for job offers to troubled countries

Prospective overseas Filipino workers were reminded against falling for supposed job offers in at least three countries considered hotspots due to the armed tension there.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration particularly warned against falling for recruiters promising jobs in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan.

"Huwag pong papatol sa recruiter para sa Iraq, Syria, at Afghanistan," he said on his Twitter account.

Last Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs recommended the immediate suspension of overseas voters registration in five areas considered hotspots, including Iraq and Syria.

The DFA had also recommended the suspension of registration in Libya, Ukraine, and the Gaza Strip"in view of the deteriorating security situation in these areas."

Also last month, the Department of Labor and Employment imposed a total ban on the deployment of OFWs to Afghanistan, on which the DFA had placed Alert Level 3 (voluntary repatriation).

Covered by the ban imposed by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Governing Board are "returning/vacationing overseas Filipino workers bound for Afghanistan."

Afghanistan has been experiencing tension following the presidential elections there last June 14, the DOLE said.

Meanwhile, the DOLE said the deployment ban on new hires for Afghanistan issued on December 17, 2007 is still in effect.  Joel Locsin /LBG, GMA News
