UAE court reduces fines for 3 Emiratis who lashed Pinoy workers

A United Arab Emirates appellate court on Tuesday reduced the fines of three Emiratis accused of lashing five Filipino and Indian employees in November last year.

The five filed a complaint with the Fujairah police saying the three Emirati employees lashed them with their iqal (black cord), UAE news site Khaleej Times reported Thursday.

But the Fujairah Court of Appeals reduced the fine imposed on the three Emirati employees for mistreating and beating up the foreign workers – from Dh10,000 (roughly P121,000) to Dh5,000 (P60,500) each.

According to the Filipino and Indian workers, they were transporting some items of their company on instructions of their manager.

Upon reaching the destination, three Emiratis who were also employees of their company, told them to move the items somewhere else.

An argument led to the three Emirati employees lashing the five with their iqal, the black cord used to keep the Arab headgear in place.

But the Emiratis denied the charge and were referred to the Public Prosecution and then to the Court of First Instance on the charge of assaulting workers.  Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
