22 mostly Pinoy crew members rescued as ship runs aground off Greece

Military helicopters and local firemen rescued 22 mostly Filipino crewmembers from a bulk carrier that ran aground off a Greek island last week, reports said.

A video on Independent.ie showed a helicopter airlifting 11 of the 22 crew members from the Cyprus-flagged cargo ship MV Good Faith, while local firemen helped the others reach the shore.

A report on Cyprus news site Famagusta Gazette said MV Good Faith was hit by a strong gale while sailing from Eleusis in Greece to Odessa in the Black Sea.

Citing Greek authorities, the Famagusta report said the crew consists of 21 Filipinos and one Romanian.

A separate report on the Daily Mail said the ship's crew issued a distress signal after the 16,000-ton vessel drifted toward the rocky shoreline of Andros, causing it to take on water.

The Independent.ie report said no one among the crewmembers was injured and only minor pollution was caused by the accident. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
