Young Pinay honored in Australia for Taekwondo feats

The daughter of a noted Filipina Taekwondo athlete herself has earned distinctions from a news publication for her outstanding achievements in the same martial art.

Parramatta Advertiser awarded Taekwondo wonderkid Abby Sangalang its Junior Sports Star of the Year Award out of dozens of finalists on Wednesday.

A report on the Daily Telegraph said Sangalang was given a medal and a cash award of $1000, which would help her continue competing as she moves to the senior division.

Sangalang's mother, Natalia, a former Philippines national team member, had trained her from a young age at their family-owned Taekwondo Academy for Young Athletes (TAYA).

According to TAYA's website, Sangalang's rank is 3rd Dan Kukkiwon black belt, having started her training at the age of 6.

The young athlete quickly gained traction in competitive circuits, becoming the New South Wales champion three times in 2012 and twice in 2013.

In 2014, she won gold at the Oceania Championships, reached round 16 in the World Junior Taekwondo Champinoships, and was ranked by the Australian Institute of Sport among the country's Top 50 Emerging Taekwondo Athletes. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
