Illegal recruiter uses TV reporter’s name to fool victims
A hunt is on for an illegal recruiter who promised Filipino job seekers work in Canada – and claiming to be a relative of a television reporter.
The suspect would introduce herself as "Engineer Marie Consulta" and a sister of GMA reporter John Consulta, GMA Bicol's Avril Daja reported Thursday.
GMA News' Consulta denied knowing any "Engineer Marie Consulta," adding he does not have a sister in the first place, and that he has no relative engaged in labor recruitment.
Eleven victims of "Engineer Consulta" from Naga and Iriga Cities said the suspect had promised them jobs at an oil and gas company in Canada for P3,000 each.
"Nagtrabaho raw siya sa Canada. Kaya raw siya umuwi rito sa Pilipinas, kasi kailangan niya raw ng aplikante," said one of the victims.
They said the suspect would disappear once she got the money. Worse, they found the documents they were shown, including the plane tickets, were fake.
Some of the victims complained they even resigned from their old jobs last November because of the suspect's promises of a new job abroad.
"Sana sa mga nais pumunta sa Canada, mag-ingat po kayo kasi marami ngayong nagpapanggap lalo na yung Engineer Marie Consulta kung saan magaling talaga gumawa at magpaikot ng aplikante na hinihikayat niya," one of the victims said. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
