44 candles lit for SAF 44 at PHL Embassy in Washington

The Filipino community in the United States lit 44 candles at the Philippine Embassy in Washington D.C., as tribute to the 44 Special Action Force troopers killed in a clash in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Jan. 25.

In photos posted on its Twitter account Thursday, the Embassy said the candle-lighting was part of a memorial service for the slain elite troopers.

Photos showed participants lighting the candles during the ceremony, "for each of Gallant 44 of the Philippine National Police Special Action Force."

The candles were placed before an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Ambassador Jose Cuisia Jr. led the Filipino community during the memorial service.

Last weekend, various groups honored the memory of the slain 44 with unity walks - but also with a call for justice.  Joel Locsin/RSJ, GMA News
