2 Pinoy seafarers with medical problems rescued off Portugal
Two Filipino seafarers who developed medical conditions while at sea were evacuated with the help of the Portugese Navy, according to reports reaching the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon.
One seafarer was evacuated near Portuguese coastal waters and brought to Lisbon, while the other was evacuated within Portugal’s maritime search and rescue region in the Atlantic and brought to a hospital in Ponta Delgada,
The Philippine Embassy in Portugal under Ambassador Philippe Lhuillier was immediately notified by the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Center (MRCC) of the two seafarers' condition, and had coordinated with the local shipping agencies of the two to attend to their medical treatment and repatriation.
"The timely notification from the MRCC of the Portuguese Navy allows the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon to immediately attend to the cases in coordination with the local shipping agents of the Filipino seafarers’ employers to ensure the welfare of the seafarers and that all matters related to the medical treatment and repatriation of the seafarers are properly acted upon," the embassy said.
