Kin of 2 OFWs who died while vacationing in PHL to receive OWWA benefits

The families of two overseas Filipino workers who died while vacationing in the Philippines will still receive compensation from the government, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) said Wednesday.

In a news release, the OWWA said the families of Anselmo R. Cayabyab and Oscar B. Ilagan will receive death and burial benefits amounting to P220,000 as the cause of their deaths was accidental in nature.

Cayabyab, who worked in Papua New Guinea, was killed in a vehicular accident in San Fabian, Pangasinan, while Ilagan, a factory worker in Athens, Greece, was stabbed to death while sleeping at his home in Batangas.

report on Tempo said Cayabyab was killed when the jeep he was riding with 10 others fell into a ravine while on their way to a resort last May 19.

Cayabyab and Ilagan's families will also receive P15,000-worth of livelihood package while their first-born will receive educational assistance until the end of their college education.

They may also apply for the Education and Livelihood Assistance Program (ELAP), the OWWA said.

OWWA Administrator Rebecca J. Calzado urged OFWs to renew their OWWA memberships in order to protect their families in case of any untimely accidents. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
