A 12-year-old Filipino-Singaporean girl was killed in the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit Sabah on June 5, a statement from the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said Sunday.
According to the embassy, Kinabalu Park authorities confirmed the death of Karyl Mitzi Higuit Matahom, who was in Sabah as part of her school’s educational tour of the area.
Matahom was one of a number of students from the Tanjong Katong Primary School in Singapore who perished in the quake, the embassy said.
A resident of Singapore, Karyl's mother is Filipino and her father a Singaporean.
Pinoy hikers rescued
The embassy also reported that four Filipino hikers were rescued from Mount Kinabalu and brought to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for check-up.
The four were identified as Mary Naomi Gail Angeles Malones, Kenneth Cueto Almonte, Anna Rose Gumantazon Curiano and Michael William Echevarria.
Vice Consul Francis Herrera is now in Kota Kinabalu to coordinate with Singaporean authorities regarding Matahom’s remains and to render assistance to the rescued hikers, the statement added.
In an updated statement, the embassy said it was notified by the Singaporean Ministry of Foreign Affairs that Matahom’s remains will be brought back to Singapore on Sunday.
