Four Filipino fishermen who were arrested in Indonesia more than a month ago for illegal fishing will finally arrive home on Wednesday, with more expected to follow, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Tuesday.

The DFA said the four fishermen, who it did not identify, were arrested last April 30 for entering Indonesian waters with neither passports nor travel documents.

The four were crewmembers of KM Sta. Cruz, KM Sto. Tomas, KM San Jose, and FB Vient, the DFA said. They will return home to General Santos City after a brief stay at a temporary shelter provided by the Department Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) upon their arrival.

"The DFA and DSWD have been working together to assist Filipino fishermen repatriated from Indonesia," the DFA said in a statement.

It said 43 other Filipino fishermen arrested by Indonesian authorities for illegal fishing will soon be repatriated through the efforts of the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (OUMWA).

Their release is being arranged by the Philippine Consulate General in Manado in coordination with Indonesian government authorities, the DFA said.

Earlier this month, 52 fishermen returned to the Philippines after being arrested by Indonesian authorities for illegal fishing. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
