Despite MERS cases, no deployment ban to South Korea yet —POEA head

There is no ban yet on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers to South Korea despite the rising number of cases of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) there, Hans Cacdac, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration head, said.

"No ban thus far," Cacdac said.

MERS cases have reached 150 so far and 16 fatalities have been reported, South Korea's health ministry said Monday.

Cacdac said POEA relies on other government agencies in declaring a deployment ban of OFWs.

“We rely on Department of Health (DOH) and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) recommendations in this regard," he said.

“We have been monitoring the situation of our OFWs through the DFA, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) labor attache, and Korean ministry of employment," Cacdac said.

On Wednesday, Filipinos in South Korea have assured their families in the Philippines of their well-being amid the increasing number of MERS-CoV cases there with several confirmed deaths.

The DFA on Monday, June 8, said there is no travel restriction yet to South Korea despite the rising number of MERS-CoV cases. —KG, GMA News
