Filipinos who have studied in the United Kingdom for at least a year and who have been awarded from UK universities an undergraduate degree or postgraduate certificate/diploma are now entitled to a two-year work visa.

The Post-study Work visa replaces the International Graduate Scheme (IGS) which allowed foreign students from non-member countries of the European Economic Area (EEA) to work in the UK for one year.

This new visa scheme offers degree and certificate holders from UK universities an opportunity to look for employment and work without needing a work sponsor for two years.

"Now they have decided that they can give students two years which actually we think is a good move because it’s been very hard for students to get any valuable professional type job when they got only a 12-month visa. Many employers would not want to commit to someone who could only stay for 12 months. Two years looks like a much better investment," explained Neil Gaskin, International Student Adviser of the University of Wales, Swansea.

Many Filipino students in the UK see this as an opportunity to earn work experiences in the UK before going back to the Philippines.

"Para sa akin okay siya kasi bibigyan ka ng chance na makapag work for two years, tapos pwede ka na makapag-ipon bago ka makauwi sa Pilipinas. It’s a positive [development] compared dun sa dati na one year lang," said Iris Acejo, a postdoctoral student in social sciences at Cardiff University.

"I will try it. Wala naman mawawala sa akin at least i- try ko yung UK education, kung paano i- apply dito," Acejo added.

Filipinos who have gone back to the Philippines after completing their studies in the UK can still apply for this type of visa in the Philippines. The opportunity to apply for this type of visa expires one year after the award of a degree or certificate from a UK university.

The country has also introduced a new visa scheme patterned after the Australian style points-based system, the Tier 1 of the points-based system, for highly skilled workers, entrepreneurs and investors wishing to come to the United Kingdom. It replaces the two-staged Highly Skilled Migrant program.

Applicants for this type of visa however have to prove that they can make a positive contribution to the country by satisfying the following criteria: previous earnings, age and United Kingdom experience.

Other types of visa are expected to also be introduced for skilled workers with a job offer and temporary workers like musicians, actors, and sportsmen.
