Charges filed vs 'notorious' human trafficker in Malaysia
MANILA, Philippines - Justice Undersecretary Ricardo R. Blancaflor on Wednesday announced that the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking filed charges of trafficking against a Singapore national who has victimized hundreds of Filipino women.
"This is the first attempt of the Philippine government to initiate a case of human trafficking against a foreign national and the same to be prosecuted in a foreign soil," said Blancaflor, who is concurrently acting chairman of IACAT.
"This is also the first attempt of any government to seek another government's assistance," he said.
Leading the team in filing the case in Malaysia is Assistant Chief State Prosecutor Severino GaƱa of the Department of Justice.
The suspect, a Singaporean, was arrested Monday with his wife. Blancaflor said the suspect victimized hundreds of Filipino women who were promised work in Malaysia. The women ended up as "slaves."
"They were not paid salaries, were hardly fed, and were sexually exploited and physically maltreated," said Blancaflor in a statement.
