Noli hopes Obama administration would be beneficial to OFWs

MANILA, Philippines - Vice President Noli de Castro on Wednesday expressed hope that the administration of newly elected US president Barack Obama would be beneficial to Filipino immigrants and overseas workers.

In a press statement released shortly after Obama’s victory, De Castro said the Philippines will continue to extend a hand of unity to the US especially in finding solutions to the problems caused by the global financial crisis.

"We hope that under his leadership, the US-Philippine relationship will reach unprecedented heights of cooperation. Likewise, we make an appeal that his (Obama’s) reform policies shall be beneficial to the Philippines as well as Filipino immigrants and the OFWs," De Castro said.

In a separate statement, Senate President Manuel Villar also hoped for a continued strong relationship between the US and the Philippines.

“The victory of Obama as the first African-American US president is admirable. We hope that the relationship between Philippines and America will remain strong under his administration," Villar said in a statement.

Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile, in an interview with reporters, said Obama will surely pursue good relations with Asian countries.

"He needs Asia as much as Asia needs America. He cannot disregard Asia. The world is interlinked already. No part of this world is isolated from the other. America cannot afford to be isolated," Enrile said.

For his part, Sen Richard Gordon said Obama's ascendancy to the White House signals a political and cultural paradigm shift as it sends a clear and loud message to peace and freedom-loving nations.

"The impossible has happened. Change has indeed come to America, and it was made possible by the power of the ordinary people," Gordon said. - Amita Legaspi, GMANews.TV
