More layoffs in the offing in UAE, Migrante reports

MANILA, Philippines — Terminated foreign workers including OFWSs in the United Arab Emirates are now asking their employers not to cancel their work visas, which would allow them to extend their stay for three months hoping to find another job, Migrante International said on Tuesday.

This developed as about 700 workers, including some OFWs, were laid off in two companies in the past week due to the worsening global financial crisis now hitting even the most popular financial center in the Middle East .

Migrante-Middle East said laid off workers are pleading with their employers not to cancel their work visas or seek No objection Certificate or NOC, which would allow retrenched workers to extend their stay for three months hoping to find another job within the period, Migrante said.

Nhel Morona, Migrante-UAE secretary general, said based on the information gathered from some OFWs who were also laid off, a rough estimate of 500 workers were fired by Nakheel company and 200 by DAMAC-2 company.

"Many of those laid offs are OFWs along with migrants of other nationalities. We have just received today information that there are about 100 OFWs who will be laid off from work in Abu Dhabi. It is feared that many more will be laid off in the coming days," Morona said in a press statement.

"I have spoken with OFWs particularly those working with Nakheel and DAMAC-2, two big companies engaged in construction, housing and realty here in the UAE. They confirmed that there are several OFWs that were laid offs from their work," Morona said.

"This is the only option left to laid off workers until they find a new job in the Emirates," Morona said.

Morona added if the 3-months grace period lapses, only then would the terminated OFWs be forced to leave the country.

The group expressed fear that the number of distressed workers may soon increase should more laid off workers secure an NOC.

Migrante-UAE called on the Arroyo regime to craft a blue print to cushion the impact of the global financial crisis which worst is yet to come, so that OFWs that will be terminated will be absorb by local employment back home. - GMANews.TV
