4-year-old girl allegedly from PHL tested for coronavirus in HK

A four-year-old girl allegedly from the Philippines was tested for the Novel coronavirus in a Hong Kong hospital over the weekend, a Hong Kong news site reported Sunday.

Radio Television Hong Kong reported the girl was kept in isolation and is in stable condition, and that preliminary tests showed she did not have the illness.

"The girl, from the Philippines, had traveled (to Hong Kong) with her parents from Qatar and was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital suffering from fever and headaches," the RTHK report said.

It quoted the Centre for Health Protection as saying the girl is "being kept in isolation and is in a stable condition."

Ko was quoted in the report as saying the Hospital Authority will work with airlines to improve health warnings to travelers.

Health scare

Hong Kong Standard reported on Monday that the girl caused a "health scare" after she showed symptoms such as cough, fever and headache shortly after arrival.

She was brought to a private hospital and then isolated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday night.

But doctors found the girl was suffering from adenovirus, which the Hong Kong Standard described as "a respiratory infection that usually infects young kids."

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said adenoviruses can "infect anyone" but most cases "are not serious." Their symptoms include fever, diarrhea, pink eye (conjunctivitis or sore eyes), bladder infection or rash illness.

The report said the scare came shortly after a male flight attendant who had been in Saudi Arabia from March 4 to 7 showed symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

He was isolated and treated at Queen Elizabeth Hospital on March 9 but tested negative and was found to be suffering from the flu.

Coronavirus

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a novel coronavirus caused respiratory illness in 15 adults from four countries from April 2012 to February 2013.

It caused respiratory illness in 15 adults from Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom, with symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

"Among the 15 cases, nine were fatal. One of the cases experienced a mild respiratory illness and fully recovered. This virus is different from any other coronavirus that has infected people and made them sick. Also, this virus is different from the coronavirus that caused SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in 2003," it added. —KG, GMA News
