Pinoy nurse accused of killing fellow Pinoy in UAE with potato peeler

A 39-year-old Filipino nurse faced a United Arab Emirates (UAE) court on Monday for allegedly killing a fellow Filipino by stabbing him three times with a potato peeler after a quarrel over a woman in October last year.

However, the Filipino nurse claimed that the killing was accidental, saying he had no intention of murdering his compatriot, a Gulf News report said on Tuesday.

On the other hand, a report of the Emirates 24/7 news site said the Filipino suspect only admitted to consuming alcohol but not to killing the Filipino victim.

Meanwhile, a Khaleej Times news report cited prosecution records saying the victim and two other Filipino nurses, were at the suspect's residence on the night of the incident.

The verbal brawl that reportedly erupted between the victim and the suspect escalated into physical violence.

The suspect claimed that the victim assaulted him with his fist. Overpowered, he had to use the potato peeler as a weapon to defend himself, Khaleej Times said.

The other Filipino nurse who witnessd the incident said he and their female companion tried to stop the fight.

The nurse said they were not aware that the victim had been stabbed.

On Emirates 24/7, the witness said, "As my friend and I stepped out of the lift, we saw him on the floor and he was hardly breathing. I felt his chest and my hand was stained by blood. Lifting up his dress I saw a stab wound, so we called the police.”

The victim was brought to the Rashid Hospital but did not survive.

Meanwhile, Khaleej Times said the suspect was arrested at the Dubai International Airport whil he was allegedly trying to flee the country.

The presiding judge said the court will appoint a lawyer to defend the suspect when it reconvenes on March 25. - with Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
