OFW Guide Advisory for HK-based Pinoys seeking jobs in Canada

Filipinos in Hong Kong seeking work in Canada should always make sure they are dealing with properly registered Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCICs).

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong issued the reminder Thursday after meeting with representatives of the Consulate General of Canada last Feb. 18.

"It is possible for an individual to apply for a job in Canada without going through an employment agency in Hong Kong. However, it might be necessary to coordinate with an immigration consultant or employment agency in Canada to ensure the availability of a labor market opinion (LMO)," the consulate general said in an advisory.

Filipinos seeking work in Canada in this manner were urged to make sure the contacted immigration consultant or employment agency is a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC).

The RCIC should in turn be registered with the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC), it added.

"To ensure legitimacy, only deal with RCICs registered with the ICCRC," the consulate general said.

On the other hand, the consulate general said it is also possible for a member of a Canadian provincial or territorial society to represent a prospective jobseeker.

But it also noted an application for a work permit may be refused by the Canadian government if a jobseeker uses the services of a consultant who is not in good standing with the ICCRC or a Canadian law society.

It also advised jobseekers to seek help at the Canada Visa Application Centre for determining the completeness of documentary requirements, though this is a paid service.

It added submitting fraudulent documents or lying on an application or interview with a Canadian visa officer can make one inadmissible to Canada for two years.

The consulate general also noted the Canadian Consulate General already returned 10 passports of Filipinos that sought working visas but lacked supporting documents.

"Please note that incomplete applications will not be processed," it said.

Meanwhile, the consulate general said those who want to report illegal recruitment can go to the Assistance to Nationals Section of the Philippine Consulate General, or contact the ATN at 2823-8510 or atn1@philcongen-hk.com. — KBK, GMA News
