Pinoys in HK warned vs scams via dating websites

Filipinos in Hong Kong were warned Thursday against a new wave of Internet-based scams, especially those on dating websites.

The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong said these virtual boyfriends or girlfriends will likely ask for money, or drag them into potential scams.

"(T)he public is warned to watch out for persons who ask for money purportedly because they were admitted to the hospital or detained by the police, especially if you do not know these persons personally and are only acquainted via dating web sites," it said in a warning posted on its Facebook account.

It added these virtual boyfriends or girlfriends "might try to convince you to pretend to be their spouse and claim money from questionable sources."

The Consulate General did not immediately give details on whether Filipinos in Hong Kong had been victimized by such scams.

However, it advised Filipinos there to report such activities to the Assistance to Nationals section at 2823-8510 or via email at hongkongpc@philcongen-hk.com. — VC, GMA News
