PHL envoy finds Pinay’s death in Malaysia fire ‘unusual’

Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia Jose Eduardo Malaya has described as "unusual" the death of a Filipina there supposedly from a fire incident, a report on "Balitanghali" said Tuesday.

"Medyo unusual yung pangyayari kung saan yung tao ay mukha yatang 'di nakalabas sa isang bahay habang ito ay nasusunog," Malaya said, referring to Rose Lloren Nepotente, whose death the Philippine embassy wants probed.

According to reports reaching the embassy, Nepotente was killed when her apartment was set on fire, allegedly by a robber who entered it last Tuesday, but her relatives in the Philippines want further investigation.

The victim's mother, Virginia Lloren, has questioned why the fire that killed her daughter was confined to her room and left the other parts of the apartment undamaged.

Meanwhile, Vice President Jejomar Binay, the presidential adviser on OFW concerns, affairs has asked the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia to expedite its investigation into Nepotente's death to ease her family's grieving.

"I urge our embassy in Kuala Lumpur to exhaust all means necessary to help shed light on the death of our kababayan and in the process, bring justice to her family," Binay said.

The victim's Malaysian husband, who was reportedly outside the apartment when fire incident occurred, found her body inside her room on June 2.

Police remarked that the victim was put to sleep with a chemical before she was burned.

Nepotente, who is from South Cotabato, had no records with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA). Before moving to Malaysia, she reportedly worked in Singapore using a tourist visa. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
