Pinoy nurse making waves in UK with artistic cake designs

Hailed by The Daily Mail as a favorite to win the British reality baking show, Filipino nurse Alvin Magallanes of the Great British Bake Off wowed fans with his Instagram photos of gorgeous cakes and pastries.

The 37-year-old nurse from the Philippines came in second on the technical challenge of the GBBO's first episode and wowed judges despite his Madeira cake flopping at the end.

Magallanes thanked his supporters in a tweet after the episode aired and commiserated with fellow contestant Stu Henshall, the first to be eliminated this season.

Magallanes works at Heatherwood Hospital in Ascot, an affluent town in England, with his wife Michelle, also a nurse, and two children. The Royal College of Nursing said Magallanes started baking for his children seven years ago and now bakes at least four times a week.
