Demafelis’ recruiters should also be put to justice, says CBCP exec

Following the death sentence slapped on the employers of Joanna Demafelis in Kuwait, an official of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said the recruiters of the slain OFW should also be put to justice.
“Now as guilty were sentenced, let us not forget those who sent, placed Joanna to Kuwait,"  Balanga Bishop Ruperto Santos, who chairs the CBCP- Episcopal Commission on Migrants and Itinerant People, told church-run Radyo Veritas on Wednesday.
"They, the Filipino recruiters of Joanna, should also be prosecuted and justice be served," he added.
Santos issued the statement after a Kuwaiti court sentenced to death Demafelis' employers, Lebanese Nader Essam Assaf and his Syrian wife Mona Hassoun. They were hunted by Interpol after the OFW's brutalized body was found inside a freezer inside their former apartment in February.
Santos, however, clarified that the Catholic Church continues to oppose capital punishment as it is contrary to their faith.
He also said the Kuwaiti government has shown sincerity in protecting the rights of foreign workers by bringing Demafelis' former employers to justice.
“It shows sincerity and seriousness of Kuwait to correct a wrong, to serve justice and to defend human rights," he said. "We hope that the case of Joanna will be last, and rights and dignity our OFWs will be protected and respected there in Kuwait.”
Demafelis was reunited with her family when her remains were repatriated to the Philippines last February 16. She was buried March 3 in her hometown of Sara, Iloilo. —Margaret Claire Layug/KBK, GMA News
