13 Pinoys who escaped from abusive employers in Dubai now in PHL
At least 13 distressed
Filipino workers who ran away from their abusive employers were repatriated
last weekend from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Philippine officials there
said.
Philippine
Consul-General in Dubai Benito Valeriano said the 13, who arrived in Manila
last August 5, were beneficiaries of repatriation initiatives by the Department
of Foreign Affairs.
“These are workers, who
have run away from their employers and whose cases have already been terminated
and are now ready to go home,” Valeriano said in a report posted on Tuesday on
the news site Khaleej Times.
He added the DFA had
authorized the consulate to repatriate 35 workers.
Vice Consul Geronimo
Suliguin and Labor Attache Delmer Cruz saw the OFWs off at the airport. The
OFWs arrived in Manila aboard a Gulf Air flight.
Suliguin, who is
supervising the Assistance to Nationals (ATN) in Dubai, said the group is the
single biggest benefitting from repatriation assistance this year.
He added the
repatriation is done under the Office of the Undersecretary for Migrant Workers
Affairs through the DFA's Assistance to Nationals (ATN) Fund.
For their part, ATN
officials Mohammad Javier Pukunum, Roberto Dayacap and Jennifer Evangelista
assisted the workers with their documentary requirements.
Meanwhile, Suliguin said
15 workers had been repatriated earlier in smaller groups.
“We are looking forward
to repatriate around 17 more, hopefully, once their papers are processed at the
immigration,” he said. - VVP, GMA News
