Lebanon justice chief assures Pinay helpers of equal treatment

Lebanon's justice minister Shakib Qortbawi has reassured the Philippines of "equal treatment" for some 30,000 Filipino household service workers there.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Shakib gave the reassurance to Philippine ambassador Leah Ruiz when she paid him a courtesy call on July 17.

"(Ruiz) thanked Minister Qortbawi for his assurance that the Lebanese government will ensure equal treatment for household service workers (HSWs) in Lebanon and the availability of legal remedies for any violations of their rights," the DFA said in a report posted on its website.

Ruiz updated Qortbawi about the recently signed Philippines-Lebanon Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Labor Cooperation and accompanying Protocol on Household Service Workers.

The MOU and protocol seek to promote and protect the rights and welfare of the Filipino migrant workers in Lebanon.

On the other hand, Ruiz also briefed the Minister on developments in the areas of political, economic and socio-cultural relations, the DFA said. - VVP, GMA News
