DOLE calls on OFWs under Korea's EPS to claim insurance
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) yesterday, through its attached agency, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), called on all overseas Filipino workers who have worked under Korea's Employment Permit System (EPS) and have returned to the Philippines to file claims for insurance.
Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz, citing a report of Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, said there is an amount of Korean Won 251,578,800 in unclaimed proceeds, or the equivalent of P9.309 million, for two insurance categories for OFWs under the EPS, namely, Departure Expense Insurance and Emigration Expiry Insurance.
The emigration expiry insurance is a type of insurance which a Korean employer pays to an insurance company to pay for severance allowance of a foreign national employed in South Korea under the EPS. The departure expense insurance, on the other hand, is paid by the employer for an EPS worker's departure expenses.
"Administrator Cacdac reported that Jeong Eun-Hee, Director General of the Human Resources Development Service of Korea, has sought the POEA's help in locating the OFW-claimants after the HRDS of Korea encountered difficulty in contacting them in the Philippines," said Baldoz.
In a letter to Cacdac, Jeong Eun-Hee said that as of November 2011, there are 453 OFWs under the EPS who had not claimed their insurance. Of the total, 265 OFWs have yet to file their claim for the Departure Expense Insurance, while 188 OFWs have yet to file their claim for the Emigration Expiry Insurance.
"We would like to ask your warm-hearted support on this matter," said the HRDS Korea official.
The HRDS Korea in the Philippines announced that to claim the insurance, qualified returnee workers under the EPS would have to undergo the following procedures:
(1) Visit the Korea HRDS website at www.hrdkoreaph.com and check your name on the unclaimed insurance list.
(2) If qualified, follow the guidelines. Fill out the application form and upload the requirements. Send them through the website.
(3) The EPS Center will transfer the application forms to the head office after verification.
(4) The insurance company (in South Korea) will verify the requirements again and remit the money to applicant’s bank account.
(5) Applicants will receive the insurance money
The documents required for the insurance claim include the insurance application form, photocopy of the front page of the passport, and photocopy of bank account. The name of the claimant should be the same on both passport and bank account.
To submit the requirements through the website, www.hrdkoreaph.com, a claimant needs to: (a) join as a member and then log in; (b) look for the icon for unclaimed insurance and click; (c) follow the guidelines and fill out the application form and attach the requirements; and (d) submit. The HRDS Korea in the Philippines said the receiving period for the claims is four to six weeks from the application date.
