PHL Consulate General in Hong Kong closed on Aug. 20

The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Hong Kong will be closed on August 20, a Monday, to mark Eid ul-Fitr that will cap the holy Islamic month of Ramadan.

In an announcement on its website, the Consulate General said Filipinos may contact the following numbers:

·         Consulate assistance: (852) 9155-4023
·         Labor hotline: (852) 6080-8323
·         Overseas Workers Welfare Administration hotline: (852) 6345-9324

MalacaƱang’s Proclamation 295, issued on Nov. 24 last year, lists Aug. 21 as a “special non-working day,” and Aug. 27 as a regular holiday.

However, the proclamation also said another proclamation may be issued declaring national holidays for the observance of Eid’l Fitr and Eidul Adha, "after the approximate dates of the Islamic holidays have been determined in accordance with the Islamic calendar (Hijra) or the lunar calendar, or upon Islamic astronomical calculations, whichever is possible or convenient."

The proclamation said the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) shall inform the Office of the President on which day the holiday shall fall.

Aug. 21 marks the 29th death anniversary of former Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., President Benigno Aquino III’s father.

The elder Aquino was assassinated upon returning to the Philippines. His killing sparked protests that eventually led to the EDSA-1 revolt in 1986.

National Heroes’ Day, observed on the last Monday of August, is dedicated to the memory of Philippine heroes throughout history. - VVP, GMA News
