Death toll from monsoon nears 100, damage to property jumps to P2.263-B


The death toll from last week's heavy rain and floods brought by an enhanced monsoon neared the 100 mark, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

 
As of early Tuesday, the NDRRMC said the death toll had risen to 95, according to a report by radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr.
 
Of the 95 fatalities, it said 69 died from drowning, while 12 died due to a landslide, the NDRRMC said in its Monday evening update.
 
The NDRRMC also said the damage to property jumped up to P2.263 billion, including P1.624 billion in agriculture.
 
At least four people remain missing while at least 11 people were injured due to landslides, vehicular accidents, and snakebites, it added.
 
The NDRRMC said last week's heavy rain affected 761,189 families or 3,457,774 people in 2,404 villages in 170 towns and 36 cities in 16 provinces.
 
Of these, 74,930 families or 341,915 people are staying in 810 evacuation centers.
 
At least 11 roads and three bridges were still not passable to vehicles in Ilocos, Central and Southern Luzon, and Cordillera.
 
Damage
 
The NDRRMC said the damage to property was estimated at P2,263,539,045.14, including P639,128,230 in infrastructure and P1,624,410,815.14 in agriculture.
 
At least 41 cities and towns in Ilocos, Central and Southern Luzon, Region 11 and Metro Manila were declared under a state of calamity. –KG, GMA News
