MANILA - The Philippine government condemned the mass shooting at 2 mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that left at least 49 dead and 40 others wounded.
"The Philippines joins all peace-loving nations and peoples around the world in condemning - in the strongest and in no uncertain terms - this assault on the faithful in places of worship," Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.
"This reprehensible act has no place in a civilised world. The Philippines rebukes all efforts to sow terror and fear between and among peoples."
The gunman broadcast footage of the attack on one mosque on Facebook, mirroring the carnage played out in video games, after publishing a "manifesto" in which he denounced immigrants, calling them "invaders."
It was the worst ever mass killing in New Zealand and the country raised its security threat level to the highest, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said, adding, "this can now only be described as a terrorist attack."
Malacañang offers prayers and sympathy to the victims and people of New Zealand in a time of grief and outrage.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident, and we pray for strength and speedy recovery of those who were injured," Panelo added.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Philippine Embassy in Wellington is closely monitoring the situation.
The agency said there are almost 5,000 Filipinos in Christchurch, a city on the east coast of New Zealand's south island. - With a report from Reuters
