OFWs catching flight dead, hurt in NLEX road accident


Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 24) — Majority of the casualties in the vehicular accident that occurred along North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) on Saturday were female overseas Filipino workers (OFW), the police said.
Supt. Elmer Decena of Apalit Police said 13 of the 14 casualties were OFWs leaving for Saudi Arabia while the remaining one was their agency's representative.
Five of the Filipino workers died while the remaining nine passengers were injured.
The figures are different from yesterday's count of six dead and five injured.
The passengers were headed to the Clark International Airport in Pampanga onboard a Hyundai 100 van when the vehicle lost control from a blown tire while traversing through the northbound lane of the NLEX.
The impact from the tire caused the van's door to open, throwing out five of the passengers. It also rolled over and crushed some of the people inside it.
The driver of the van, identified as John Leo Jaylo, 28, was arrested. A charge of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injury, and damage to property is being prepared against Jaylo, Decena said.

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
