Bishop asks government: Run after loan sharks victimizing OFWs

A Catholic bishop is urging the government to launch a crackdown on loan sharks victimizing overseas Filipino workers.
Isa Avendaño-Umali on "Dobol B sa News TV" reported Friday that Bataan Bishop Ruperto Santos, who also heads the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People also appealed to government to allow overseas Filipino workers easy access to the OFW bank for loans.
Quoting Bishop Santos, Umali said that recently, Hong Kong authorities discovered that a Hong Kong-based lending firm held 1,400 OFW passports as collateral for loans.
Moreover, Santos was quoted as saying that loan sharks targeting OFWs use the passports to blackmail the workers to exact exorbitant interest for loans.
Santos also urged the government to investigate and punish, if found guilty, loan sharks taking advantage of the OFWs.
He expressed hopes that the newly established OFW bank would be made accessible and offer migrant workers loans so they won't fall victims to loan sharks. —LBG, GMA News
