Philippines’ symbolic 100 millionth baby marks fifth birthday

The symbolic 100 Millionth Baby turns five today, July 27, 2019.

Chonalyn Sentino, born in the National Capital Region but who later moved to Region IVA (Antipolo, Rizal), turns five years old along with 99 other babies nationwide who marked the 100 million population five years ago.

This year’s celebration as symbolic babies focuses on the theme, “Sa Ika-limang taon ni Baby, Pagtutulungan Tungo sa Maunlad at Malusog na Kinabukasan.” The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) Regional Offices have been following up the health status of their respective symbolic 100 millionth babies since their birth.

This is to determine the type of support in terms of nutrition, education, health services, among others, that still need to be extended to the symbolic babies and their respective families in the coming years. With some 100,981,437 Filipinos, based on the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN), the Philippine population has been consistently growing since the 1970s.

The population issue the country is facing serves as an institutional reality check which calls for the involvement of everyone in the society. POPCOM Undersecretary Dr. Juan Antonio A. Perez III emphasized on working together in the pursuit of a better quality of life for the symbolic babies. “Half a decade ago, we welcomed these babies in our society.

Everyone must do their part in the achievement of these children’s total well-being. These include their families, communities they live in, schools they go to, government agencies and other sectors around them. We must work together to ensure that their basic rights on social services are provided, for them to be productive members of the society.” Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority shows that 3.8 million Filipino families did not have sufficient income to meet their basic food and non-food needs.

The birth of the 100 millionth baby remains a challenge to the government as they are expected to demand an increase of the family’s capacity to provide for the needs of their children. Thus, this event calls for paying proactive attention to the importance of maternal and neonatal health as well as promotes responsible parenthood and family planning among Filipino families. Form No. PR-IMCD-FM003 Version No. 02 Effectivity Date: April 1, 2019 National directives emphasizing the key role of family planning to achieve poverty reduction and the country’s demographic dividend are already being implemented by the government.

The Philippine Population and Management Program (PPMP) is anchored on the Duterte administration’s 10-point socio-economic program which aims to strengthen the implementation of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health (RPRH) Law to enable especially poor couples to make informed choices on financial and family planning.

This is significantly reinforced by President Duterte’s issuance of Executive Order No. 12 to achieve and sustain zero unmet need for modern family planning and also the approval of the intensified implementation of the National Program on Population and Family Planning (NPPFP). Usec. Perez has always believed that a happy, healthy and empowered Filipino family is a country’s greatest potential. “We aim to provide quality life for these babies, now children, and make every Filipino count in the progress and development of the country as the population increases rapidly every year. More than the quantity, POPCOM trusts that the quality of life of the Filipino people, specifically, of the youth and growing workforce, is the key to our economy’s growth.

Today, the Philippines is the 13th largest country in the world in terms of population. All the 13 countries have over 100 million population as of 2018.”, Usec Perez added. Five years ago, POPCOM, identified the Philippines’ symbolic 100 millionth babies, a demographic event when the country hit its 100 millionth mark in terms of population count.
