No Pinoys hurt in Indonesia quake —consul
No Filipinos were reported hurt following Sunday's 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck off the northeastern coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi island.
Interviewed on Dobol B sa News TV on Monday, Oscar Orcine, the Philippine Consul General to Manado, a seaside resort city, said they are monitoring the situation but so far they have not received a report of a Filipino affected by the quake.
"Nag-check kami, tinawagan namin yung aming kilala na nandito at sila ay safe naman," Orcine said.
Orcine said most of the Filipinos in the area are teachers who may be on vacation elsewhere when the earthquake struck late Sunday night.
"Ang mga Filipino dito karamihan ay mga teacher. Mabuti nagkataon ay semestral break at balita namin ay nakabakasyon sila sa Pilipinas o sa ibang lugar," he said.
The quake struck out at sea at a revised depth of 36 km (22 miles) and several smaller aftershocks followed, according to the Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG as reported by Reuters.
There were no immediate reports of casualties.
According to a follow-up report by Agence France-Presse, Indonesia's geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities nearby, but later lifted it.
Residents of Manado, which is 185 km (115 miles) from the epicenter, said the quake was felt strongly for several seconds but no damage was reported. —KBK, GMA News
