UAE employer faces trial for beating up Pinay maids - report

An employer in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates is facing trial for allegedly beating up his two Filipino maids, and failing to pay their salaries.

Online news site Khaleej Times on Saturday reported that the Philippine consulate general had requested the Fujairah ruler to expedite the investigation and hearing of the cases of the two Filipinos.

Fujairah, a largely mountainous area, is one of the seven emirates in the Middle Eastern federation of the UAE in the southeastern part of the Arabian Peninsula.

Vice Consul Edwin Mendoza identified the two maids as “AT", 27; and “RL", 21. The two accused “HM", an Emirati, his Egyptian wife, their daughter, and her children of beating and maltreating them at the slightest mistake.

The two also accused “HM" of not paying their salary for 11 months and 16 months, respectively.

Citing police records, he said “AT" ran away on April 22 from her employer's house after being severely beaten.

"AT" sought help from a Filipino community in Fujairah. The report said “AT," who bore “countless bruises on her face," was taken to a hospital.

Meanwhile, a team from the UAE’s Criminal Investigation Department and representatives of the Filipino community went to “HM"'s house to rescue “RL." The entire family was detained for one day.

On April 27, the Philippine Consulate-General sent a diplomatic request to the Fujairah ruler for assistance in expediting the investigation and the hearing of the case.

Mendoza said that during the first court hearing on Monday, “HM" denied the charges, and reportedly said that “AT" and “RL" had a heated argument and beat up each other. - GMANews.TV
