(UPDATE) 2 OFWs killed in an explosion in Qatar - report

(Updated 1:05 p.m.) MANILA, Philippines - Two Filipino bomb technicians working for the interior ministry of Qatar were killed in what seemed to be a ‘firecracker’ incident there earlier this week.

Bombo Radyo reported early Friday that Qatari police initially identified the victims as Eldred Brinas and Ramon Espiritu, both residents of Tondo in Manila.

GMANews.TV however, received an e-mail from a Filipino in Qatar who claimed to know the sister of one of the victims. He clarified that one of the Filipinos' names (Brinas) was actually ‘Eldrin Berina.’

According to “Marlon," Berina’s sister went to the Hamad Medical Center on Tuesday to see the victim’s remains.

Marlon reported that Berina’s face and hands were badly burnt from the explosion.

He also said the victim was working at the Bomb Division Disposal of Qatar and information about the incident was hard to come by under strict policies there.

Berina’s sister already reported the incident to the Overseas Workers’ Welfare Admnistration-Qatar.

Sketchy initial reports indicated the two were conducting an inspection when the explosion occurred. The two succumbed to extensive head injuries, the report said.

Philippine officials are now making arrangements for the repatriation of the two Filipino workers' remains. -with reports from Mark Ubalde, GMANews.TV
