DFA spokesperson Claro Cristobal told GMANews.TV in a text message that the Philippine Embassy in Nairobi assured that no Philippine citizen was among those inside the hijacked ship.

Cristobal however said that authorities are still "ascertaining whether another vessel, the Turkey-flagged MV Arean, managed to escape."

The Kenya-based East Africa Seafarers Assistance Program first reported the ship was one of the two hijacked Wednesday but had no further information.

Lehmann GmbH shipping company said in a statement that the Lehmann Timber was attacked late Wednesday in the Gulf of Aden.

This came on the heels of the hijacking of a Panama-flagged freight ship, MV Amiya Scan on May 26 (Monday) where five Filipino seafarers were confirmed to be on board.

"The owners continue to maintain regular contact with the vessel and all 15 members of the crew are well in view of the circumstances," said Gustav Jakobsen, who spoke for the German company.

The company released no details regarding the nationality of the crew members.

Piracy is rampant along the 1,880-mile (3,025-kilometer) Somali coast. Pirates have attacked 26 ships off the Horn of Africa already this year. The coastline is located near key shipping routes connecting the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. - with reports from AP, Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV
