DOLE extends help to hardest-hit OFW families


MANILA, Philippines – Families of overseas Filipino workers who have been seriously affected by floods are the priority of the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) medical and relief efforts.

“We need to provide immediate assistance to OFW-families affected by the calamity, but we need to focus on and prioritize those who are in most need," said Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz.
Baldoz gave the instruction as the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) mobilized its regional offices to ensure that the medical mission and relief operation immediately reaches OFW families in Central Luzon, the CALABARZON region, and the National Capital Region (NCR).
Baldoz, who also sits as chairman of the OWWA Board of Trustees, has approved an initial allocation of P6 million for the OWWA medical mission and relief operation.
In NCR, about 3,500 OFW family members are affected in the cities of Marikina, Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Pasig.
In Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, and Zambales, the OWWA regional office estimates around 4,800 OFW family members that need immediate medical mission and relief operations; while in the CALABARZON Region, around 15,193 OFW family members in Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal have been identified as beneficiaries.
“There are large concentration of OFW families in Binan, Calamba, Mabitac, and Sta. Cruz in Laguna; Bacoor and Imus in Cavite; and Cainta, San Mateo, and Rodriguez in Rizal," said OWWA deputy administrator Josefino Torres, who is overseeing OWWA's flood relief operation.
"For the other two regions, our OWWA regional offices are working hard to profile OFW families most affected by the floods," he added.
Days of torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon last week flooded large areas of the three regions and several areas/provinces were declared under state of calamity.
