MANILA, Philippines -- The province of Saskatchewan and the Department of Labor and Employment have recently signed a memorandum of understanding for the protection of Filipino workers in the Canadian province.

The MOU, which was signed on October 7, seeks to implement streamlined, efficient and ethical recruitment practices in human resource between the Philippines and Saskatchewan.

In an interview with Jasmin Romero in DZMM's "Trabaho Panalo" on Sunday, Jeriel Domingo, OIC and deputy administrator of the Philippine Oversease Employment Administration, explained the effects of the MOU to those who are looking for jobs.
According to Domingo, there is a projected 14,000 job openings for foreign workers.

Saskatchewan is an agricultural province, and most of the employees that would be deployed to the province are farm workers, engineers, architects and service workers. Job openings for medical workers like nurses and doctors, as well as teachers, may also be available once the POEA has finished its accreditation of recruitment agencies.
Basic salary in Canada ranges from $8 to $10 an hour for service workers like waiters.

But Domingo reminded those who are interested to know the risks and challenges that they would face once they start working abroad.
"More than a personal decision, family decision ito dapat. Siyempre iiwan mo ang pamilya mo, mahihirapan ka sa ibang bansa," Domingo added.

The POEA also warned the public to avoid online applications as it does not allow transactions with online recruiters. it is also important to check the office and the validity of the license of a recruitment agency.

Domingo stressed that those interested in working in Canada, specifically in Saskatchewan, need not pay a placement fee.
"Wala pong placement fee kapag sa Saskatchewan kayo magtatrabaho," he said.

The director also informed workers that upon hiring, employers should shoulder the worker's plane tickets to Canada.
