POEA warns applicants on nonexistent jobs in Italy

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration yesterday issued a
warning to Filipino workers against accepting offers to work for Baggio
S.p.a. Transporti Combinati in Italy.

Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said he received a report that a certain
Andrew Lorenzo, who claimed to be employed by the company, has been
recruiting Filipinos to work in the said company but their employment
documents would be processed through direct hiring in Malaysia.

The report said an agent named Arnie Almazan based in Malaysia charged
the applicants Php55,000 for placement and visa fee. Another agent in the
Philippines asked them to pay Php6,000, allegedly for POEA processing fee.

Cacdac said Andrew Lorenzo and Arnie Almazan have no authority to
recruit from the POEA and therefore were engaging in illegal recruitment
activities.

Baggio S.p.a. Transporti Combinati is a freight forwarding company based
in Venice, Italy but is not accredited with any licensed recruitment agency in
the Philippines.

Recruitment of workers through a third country is an old modus operandi in
illegal recruitment, Cacdac said.
