22 August 2014, Daine II, Indang, Cavite. Twenty two (22) OFW dependents from the OFW Family Circles of Cavite gathered in the Bahay-Pulungan of Daine OFW Federation to attend the Mobile Information Technology (IT) Program of OWWA RWO IV-A. The activity was conducted by its IT Instructor, Allen D. Cruzata and Family Welfare Officer (FWO) Ardel G. Maling, designated FWO for Cavite.

The whole day seminar covered introduction on the basics of computer course and fundamentals on Information Technology, Word, Powerpoint Presentation, and Spreadsheet. Each equipped with their own laptop computers, the trainees assembled themselves and participated actively in the lesson. During the discussion, one can see the eagerness of the participants, which are mostly wives of OFWs, to learn the basics of information technology. Some even raised curious questions, while others had a hard time in the beginning, but proved to catch up immediately later on.

It is notable that most participants are in their late 40’s and early 50’s, seemingly testifying that it is never too late to learn. Some even confessed that they are very thankful to OWWA for such program that they learned things in the computer other than Facebook and Skype. Others even shared that they had a hard time learning from their children who are in the teenage years, citing the “generation gap” between them. One participant who is an OFW himself admitted that he attended the seminar so that he too can use the laptop computer which he bought for his children. At the end of the training, the participants left the venue enlightened for their newly acquired skills.

Tagged as the “Tulay” Program, it originally aimed to “bridge” the communication gap between the OFW and dependents through basic skills and access to technology. Moreover, the program succeeded to equip or upgrade participants with basic and advanced IT skills which can also be used for employment and self-development. And eventually, the program even turned to be essential for the organizational development of the OFC in the aspects of communication, data management and record keeping.

The Cavite OFCs requested the office for another seminar, looking forward once again to RWO IV-A’s immersion to the community towards development.
