Pinoy group nominated for int’l social media awards in Cape Town

A Filipino group has been nominated for a social media award in the first Health Systems Social Media Awards for its work in engaging youth on family planning and reproductive health.

Mulat Pinoy - Kabataan News Network (MP-KNN) was nominated for the Civil Society Organization Award, which recognizes “organizations or network that best employs social media to engage civil society in health systems-related discussion.”

MP-KNN is a project of the Probe Media Foundation, Inc. (PMFI), which merged KNN, a standalone program training Filipino youth in media production, with MP in 2013 to encourage the creation and sharing of multimedia stories through social media sites.

In 2011, MP released a series of articles on family planning and reproductive health, debunking myths on contraceptives, promiscuity amongst youths, and the links between poverty and population growth.

MP-KNN continued its health-related initiatives in 2014, with articles on conception and sexual and reproductive rights.

Other nominees for the Civil Society Organization Award are groups from Bangladesh, Scotland, and Nigeria. Another Filipino group, Health Justice, is also a nominee.

Other organizational awards included in the Health Systems Social Media Awards include Best on Facebook, which recognizes an organization's best use of the site for the promotion of health systems, and Most Transparent, recognizing the use of social media to "share their internal processes and decision-making in aid of transparency."

In the individual awards category, Filipino health professionals Erlyn Rachelle Macarayan and Alvin Cloyd Dakis are in the running for Young Leader, a category honoring persons under 30 who use social media to bring attention to important health issues.

The nomination process for the 2014 Health Systems Social Media Awards will close on September 16. Winners will be announced on Sept. 25 and awarded on Sept. 30.

The awards will be presented to winners during the Third Global Symposium on Health Systems Research in Cape Town. Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
